respect of which dues are paid and

Persons

born in Hong Kong are, so far as British

law is concerned, British subjects.

There is, however, a tendency, particularly

in Chinese minds, to class Hong Kong with

the Treaty Ports, and the position in

Hong Kong of Great Britain with the

position of foreign Powers in the Concessions.

For this reason, great care has always been

taken to avoid entering into special

agreements with China which would tend to

approximate the position of Hong Kong

to that of a Treaty Port. This policy has

become more marked of late years owing to

the nationalistic drive for the abolition of
